Introduction

The Bilsa Biological Station was established in July 1994 in part with funds supplied through Equafor. It is located in the Mache Mountains of northwesern coastal Ecuador. Since September 1994, a team of four botanists have made over 2,500 collections there. Thus far new species discovered include: 6 epiphytes, 3 herbs, 5 understory trees, 4 subcanopy trees, and two canopy trees.
The preliminary plant list is presented below.
Collections are continuing as the reserve expands, so the data is far from complete, especially so among the smaller plants. Data for the bryophytes is particularly underrepresented, and is only included here for completeness. The lack of collections does not signify that mosses and liverworts were rare, but that their survey will require the services of experts in their identificaion.
A photocopy of the original report, including collection numbers and habit notes, is available upon application to the secretary of Equafor.
Navigation

Select a group from the main index, below. This may or may not lead to a sub-index, depending on how many collections were made. Flowering plants are sub-indexed by family, whereas lower plants are not indexed beyond the level given in the main index.

Notes

Plants in this list are collected together by genus.
Unidentified species are marked sp., or spp. if more than one unidentified species of the genus was found.
Tentative assignments are marked with a ?
Less, but still tentative assignments are listed as Genus cf. species, possibly indicating a variation on the species. Occasionally variations from type are noted in brackets.
New species are marked sp. nov.
