Introducing Equafor

Equafor is a charitible trust, based in Leeds. It was founded in 1994 to promote conservation of the world's rainforests through independent local initiatives.
Working in association with Tropical Worldand Leeds City Council, Equafor launched its first project, the Yorkshire Rainforest Project, whereby the people of Yorkshire helped to fund the establishment of a small rainforest reserve at Bilsa in northwest Ecuador. The funds raised by Equafor during the initial period of the project amounted to one fifth of the initial purchase cost of the reserve, and Equafor continues to support the development of the reserve.
The Yorkshire Rainforest Project has, since, acted as a model for similar projects. The people of Leicester, through Environ, a local charity, has recently joined Equafor in funding the continued work of Fundacion Jatun Sacha at Bilsa. Also in association with Equafor, Members of University College London have launched a project, Project Sozoranga, to help fund a small reserve protecting an area of deciduous tropical forest in the southwest of Ecuador.

Key to Equafor's philosophy is the establishment of a sense of identification between the local community in Britain which provides the funds and that which receives the funding. To that end, Equafor holds exhibitions at Tropical World and elsewhere in the county highlighting the work being done by our client organisation Fundacion Jatun Sacha. Equafor also provides information to, and holds events for local schools, assists colleges wishing to make use of the Bilsa reserve's research facilities, and invites the people of Yorkshire to join with us in helping to preserve the world's natural heritage.
